SCA’s Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals

SCA’s Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? In September 2015, all 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted a plan for achieving a better future for all — laying out a path over the next 15 years to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet. At the heart of “Agenda 2030” are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which clearly define the world we want — applying to all nations and leaving no one behind.

Protect the Environment- Care & Protect our planet for future generations

Sumitomo Chemical Asia’s commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and build a sustainable society through our business operations, we embarked on two solar panel installations at our facilities on Jurong Island.

We started our first solar panel project at our Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Complex Admin Building on January 2017 and this was completed successfully on 9th June 2017.

To reduce the potential health and environment risks from the electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) generated by homes and companies each year, SCA supports the nationwide e-waste management system by conducting e-waste collection at MMA’s plant and also taking part in the e-waste collection organised by DUO Tower.

Being part of Jurong Island family, SCA supports The National Parks Board and JTC projects as follows:

  • To install Singapore’s largest purpose-built reef structures at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park to enhance marine biodiversity. These structures’ surfaces are texturised using recycled rocks from other JTC’s projects to allow better attachment of corals and encrusting organisms. SCA is proud to be one of the sponsors contributing towards this project through the Garden City Fund’s Grow-A-Reef Garden initiative.

Community Engagement – Build Thriving communities where we operate

Through employee recreation and Green Committee, we partner with local NGOs and communities to roll out regular programs including fund-raising and sponsorships.

Believing in nurturing students, we have been contributing funds to the National University of Singapore Chemical Engineering Society (NUS ChESS) and Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation Scholarship, benefitting young Singaporeans and enhancing their educational opportunities. By working with other relevant organizations, we hope to contribute even in a small way to the future of our next generation.

Over the years, we continue to engage our employees with our local communities in various initiatives. Here are some of our recent activities.

Various activities run by SPUR (employee recreation committee)

SPUR (employees recreation committee) raised funds for Reach Youth Service through Charity sale of handicraft items donated by employees, bento lunches as well as employee workshops.
